Lloyds TSB London 2012

While at Rufus Leonard, ever since the original bid by Lloyds TSB to be part of 2012, I have worked on projects to create an ownable community and branch experience, that bring brand and sponsorship together in a distinctive way.

Lloyds TSB were keen for customers and colleagues to be aware of their partnership with London 2012 and understand what it means to them by feeling that they have the opportunity to get involved and benefit from 2012 activations. Their vision as Official partner is to inspire and support young people, communities and businesses across the UK on their journey to London 2012. This in turn creates a more positive feeling about the brand, driving brand consideration and recommendation.

The customer proposition is: bringing the Games closer to you, and Lloyds TSB want each of their customers to think: “Lloyds TSB is making the London 2012 Games real to me and my community – now and up to London 2012. I feel I can get involved and benefit from my bank being part of this unique experience”.

Witness Confident

In 2009, 80% of all street crime in the UK went unreported or unresolved. Witness Confident is a charity that is taking a stand against the walk-on-by culture and aims to promote greater public participation in the prevention and solution of crime and to promote good citizenship and civic responsibility in England and Wales for the public benefit.

The charity didn't exist until 2009 when, while working at Rufus Leonard, I got the brief to bring it to life with
a logo, website, and various other marketing materials.

The first day launch was in the presence of invited journalists and was streamed live on the web, while Guy Dehn, the Director of Witness Confident was interviewed the same morning on BBC Breakfast News about the charity. The logo represents a rubber stamp, which evokes adding a 'seal of approval' to the communication and can be applied at different angles and in different positions.

Public Concern at work – Biennial Review

Public Concern at Work is a whistleblowing charity that offers free, confidential advice to people concerned about crime, danger or wrongdoing at work. They also help organisations to deliver and demonstrate good governance; inform public policy; and promote individual responsibility, organisational accountability and the public interest.
This project was completed while at Rufus Leonard.

Lloyds Banking Group – Environmental branding

While at Rufus Leonard, we got a brief from Lloyds Banking Group to deliver a wider understanding to their colleagues of their group vision, purpose and business within their office environment. The office was in Bishopsgate in London and forms the headquarters of the Retail division of Lloyds Banking Group which covers Lloyds TSB, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, serving approximately 1000 members of staff.

They ultimately wanted to create an engaging environment that brought the heart of the business to the workspace, and that would start the process of building pride, while also celebrating their three strong retail brands. This then reinforced how the wider business is made up of a vast branch network, where customers and colleagues are at the heart of everything they do.

It was also important to tell a big story around Lloyds Banking Group's association with the London 2012 Olympics,
in terms of it's scale, the communities it will affect, and the inspiration it will provide to thousands, if not millions of people within the UK and around the world.

Lloyds TSB Retail

Lloyds TSB has more high street branches than any other bank in the UK, so while at Rufus Leonard, we were asked to review the retail communications approach to build advocacy amongst customers post credit crunch, establishing the bank as the definitive brand in the market, and define itself from its competitors.

The banking crisis led to all major banks to look at their existing customer base, try to stabilise their reputation and to be seen to help in tough times. In addition, new entrants to the banking market, (e.g. Tesco, Metro Bank, Virgin Money) were trying to attract disillusioned switchers. Lloyds TSB wanted to launch a number of category leading messages with clear customer benefits.

The idea
‘Leading by example’ was developed as a means of moving onto the front foot with messaging, communicating Lloyds TSB’s points of difference with confidence and clarity. Research helped identify three core themes – advice, control and accessibility – which resonated with the customers. These themes were then brought to life with various tactical campaigns.

Thinking about the entire customer journey from ATM machines and outside the branch, through to touchpoints within the branch environment, this project showed how we could enhance the visibility of the core illustration assets while using language that showed how Lloyds TSB was leading by example to try and regain some of the trust that had been lost due to the financial crisis.
